Do better keyword research to get more traffic to your site…

by Brett B on October 21, 2009

Keywords are incredibly important to your marketing efforts. “Buying” Keywords are even better.

Since we all know that about 70-80% of people that land on your web site or blog will never come back. That means as affiliate marketers, it is extremely important to accomplish 1 of 2 things when someone visits our site:

1. Capture their contact information (name and email) the first time they visit your site

and/or

2. Get them to take action the first time they come to your site, whether it is joining your business or buying something through your affiliate link

In this post I am going to focus on #2, getting someone to take action when they visit your site the first time.

One of the easiest ways that you can accomplish this is by bringing pre-qualified traffic or high quality traffic to your site by marketing using the appropriate keywords.

For new marketers, let’s back and take a look at how the whole online selling process works.

I depakote prescription prices am going to use the example of the “make money online” niche for the rest of this purchase levitra post.

When someones pulls up a search engine, article directory, or a social site like YouTube, they are generally going to type a phrase in the search box. This phrase is a “keyword phrase”, in this particular example let’s use the phrase, “how to make money online”. What ever search moneygram locations engine you are using is then going to pull up the results it feels are most relevant to what you are searching for.

One of your #1 goals as a marketer is to get your website or blog on the first page of a search engine or YouTube video listing. By doing so, you will get a lot of FREE traffic FOREVER!!! You do so by finding keywords to use that will bring qualified traffic and get your listing on the first page of a major search engine like Google, Yahoo, or Bing, or YouTube, or the article marketing directories. For the rest of this post, all 3 will be referred to as SE’s.

“Buying Keyword Phrases” are phrases that have been proven to bring a person to your site who is “ready to take action”. That means they have done all of their research, had most of their questions answered, and are ready to move ahead and join your business or buy a product. Would you rather resistance to ampicillin have 10,000 people a month visit your site and get 100 people to join your business (1%) or have 5000 highly targeted people visit and have 150 join (3%) or 250 (5%) join.

Obviously, the answer is the second or third example.

So that brings us to the real challenge, how do we find “buying traffic”?

Well, you keyword research is where it all starts. You have to research and test as many keywords as you possibly can. There is no way to know what the real buying traffic is. You can only guess. You can buy expensive keyword research tools that will show you proven KW used in PPC campaigns, but that may not necessarily translate to getting a high ranking on the SE’s.

One of the most helpful tools out there that has been given to us is Google’s own search engine.

When you type in any phrase in to the Google search bar, Google will give you a whole list of phrases that have been typed in to Google related to your search phrase. Write the phrases down that are relevant to your phrase and you will be able to dig and dig and find long tail keyword phrases that are actual phrases that have been typed in to Google.

When you type in “how to make money online” there are 8 additional phrases that show up underneath:

Base Phrase – how to make money online

1. how to make money online for free

2. how to make money online as a kid

3. how to make money online for kids

4. how to make money online yahoo answers

5. how to make money online poker

6. how to make money online surveys

7. how to make money online for beginners

8. how to make money online from home

You can do some more research to find out how many searches are being done for each phrase and also the number of competing sites for each phrase. This topic has been covered comprehensively in this forum.

Which one of these looks like a buying keyword? We really don’t know. All of these phrases are pretty broad, even though they are long tail. These may be people trying to find out general information about making money online. That is what these look like to me. These phrases may not bring you any qualified candidates.

I would also break this list down more to say that # 1, 7 and 8 are really the only phrases relevant to our niche. So these would be a good place to start doing some more research. You may be able to find additional longer tail keywords that will bring you good “buying traffic”. You won’t really know until you test and track your results.

Other tools you can use:

Google Analytics – if you don’t have Google Analytics on your site (or another on line diet analytical tool) it will be very hard to track your results. Google Analytics is Free to set up. Learn the basics and get started: http://www.google.com/analytics/

(you do not need a paid Google Adwords account to use Google Analytics)

So in summary, doing good solid keyword research for you marketing is going to make a huge difference in your success (or failure).

This is one of the main reasons why so many people fail to make money online, they are unable to do the proper research and testing to actually see what works.

They also fail to actually allow enough time to see what works. Is this you?

Good luck.
